My silence speaks volume, that I was, and still am, so fully occupied, to the brim, now just stealing a moment to share a few things with all of you.
On 26th and 27th November 2013, I was once again chosen to attend another Accountancy Conference, at the same place as WOA I attended in 2010. There are lots of things went on during the conference, lots of useful info and knowledge too, but due to the time taken to put it on this blog, well, I could just share few bits and pieces, here and there, for some were lost in memory.
Day 1
The day started with opening remarks from the IFAC President. Highlighting the increasing role and importance of accountants in the world today, going beyond just economy but into nations' stability, policy making and safeguarding. There were more than 2,000 participants, which I observed, comprised of mostly public sector officers.
Then the next session. The picture on the left says it all. It was about the future of corporate reporting. We are moving, in fact, we have taken the first few steps, towards a more comprehensive, user friendly and increased accountability, reporting that covers almost all areas regarding an entity, whether it is in terms of traditional historical accounting values, or the current and future events that will have impact on an entity. It may mean more works as reports are getting thicker, but it brings more smiles to users as the reports serve almost all their needs of information in the entities they are interested in.
Keynote address by our Finance Minister II, YB Dato Seri Ahmed Husni. |
The afternoon session consisted of 2 concurrent sessions. I chose the topic on Blue Ocean Strategy. Okay, I admit I wasn't paying much attention to the speakers or panelists. It was quite a boring forum, for me, at least. Well, it was more towards the application of the strategy in the public sector, which, as change usually brings with it, faced with resistance from the conservatives. We have seen good things coming from this strategy, as the country utilized the human resources in the army to facilitate the housing scheme implementation.
The last session for the day. On how to implement the best outsourcing or shared services. The basic rule is, whichever it is that you choose, always the benefits should outweigh the cost. As simple as that. Other than that was just an expansion of this simple rule.
Day 2
Day 2 started with quite an energetic forum on how to detect money laundering activities and suspicious transactions. Presentation from the lawyer, S Saravana (highly specialized in tax and such) and the Chief Commissioner of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, Datuk IG Chandran really made my day. Many questions raised by the participants, some with political or personal interest, like a pure fraud by cheating housing developers on payment received, but the panelists managed to set things straight and clear.
A session by TalentCorp, one of the main contributers and key players. Long explanations cut short, just visit their website. http://www.talentcorp.com.my . In the session, they presented their strategies in recruiting more young and talented people to enter into our country's poll of human resource, for the benefit of the country in realizing the Vision. The best principle is to allow young people to involve and grow in the field and area they love, giving them push and support, and allow innovation and creativity to take place.
Lunch break filled with edutainment, health tips from fitness guru, ooppss, sorry, I forgot his name, and few songs by Ferhad. Nice.
2014: Economic Outlook for Asia. Most participants were not so optimistic about the economic future. Many lamented on the increasing national debt and the predicted inability to bounce back from the fall. The forum did little to ease the growing worry, but at least it provide, be it just a little spark, hope for the better future, if, and only if, we handle our economy a little more cautiously, and aggressively at the same time.
Finally, a definite antidote for the increasing accountants' stress and pressure, a look on creativity, peace for the turbulent souls, by Datuk Ramli Ibrahim. I first saw him danced the traditional Indian dance when I was still at Secondary School. Never did I forget him, how I was mesmerized by the move, the solo dance he performed on TV commercial. It was the first time I saw Indian dance in different way. Like I could relate to the message delivered in each move. I just can't explain in words. Then, there he was, the final speaker and presenter for the Conference, I must say, well placed, well timed. He spoke of beautiful messages, delivered in words that left me gaping the whole session. I listened with my heart, that very day, not only with my ears. It feels like I can do anything my heart want, follow your heart. He spoke of balance in life, of rigidity and flexibility, hardness and softness, in togetherness to create a perfect harmony. A chemical engineer by education, he followed his heart and I guess, found his peace in arts.
All in all, 2-days conference was well filled and I am well benefited from it. Thank you to my Department for the opportunity.
