It has been quite a while I didn't update this class of posts, but it doesn't mean I have stopped reading, or buying new books. No, it will never happen.
As you may have already guessed, I crave for variety in my reading, as vast as I possibly could. This one book, in particular, is the hardest to obtain compared to other books I have in my collection. Why? I was attracted to this book while reading the review in AirAsia inflight magazine, and I found that this could be one truly different genre, a story, a love story for that matter, told in different perspective, from the 'normal' people. It was a new release, but my thought was it couldn't possibly be that hard to find that book as there are few major bookstores scattered around KK.
However, the hunt for the book was quite an adventure, but finally I found it, in Times Bookstore, only in large print, RM69.00. I hoped it worth the price.
So, what's the story about? It's about a couple, married for more than 5 years, who tried extra hard to conceive. It took them all their energy, emotions and money, but until all these ran out, they still fail. The last attempt was the exact point where both husband and wife gave up, and filed for a divorce.
In times of despair, the husband seek refuge from his brother, whom then brought him into his church where he finally became an active member, turning 180 degrees from who he was before, a drunk.
At the same time, the wife, Zoe, poured her all in her work, using music as a therapy, trying to help other people at school, hospital and such. In the process, she met a woman, a school counselor, whom she found out was gay, and to whom, to her surprise, she fell in love with, hard.
The two get married and decided to have a baby, using the embryos Zoe and her husband had in the lab, but in order to do that, they need to get consent from the husband. However, although at the first place the husband already stated that he didn't want the baby, but knowing Zoe had remarried, to a woman, he put on his armour and fight. He changed his mind and wanted the baby be conceived by his sister in law (whom he secretly had a feeling for).
The whole story circled around this problem, this fight. The spoiler: Finally the rightful and deserving party win the battle, then it's a happily ever after end.
Last words, read this with this an opened mind.
Wow...sound so complicated. I have read a few of her books in the past. The old one I think. I don't remember the titles already.
ReplyDeleteOhhh..talking about books...I didn't read for a few months already. You know...my sickness won't let me.
Yes, it is that complicated. She tells the story from 3 different angles, different point of view, Zoe's, Vanessa's and the husband's. Seems like I had to switch seat every time, it's tiring some times.
ReplyDeleteIt's understandable. Your condition requires you to have more rest, which is best for you. Anyway, it's good to have you back.
Yeah...that's Jodi Picoult's style. And she likes to write on something controversial too. Ethic..religious etc.
ReplyDeleteHehe..I am always around Veey. Tapi duduk di pisuk pisuk jak. It's good to just sit and watch the world goes round around us and do nothing sometimes. hehehe
Ah, that explains it. I am not familiar with her writings, so, this is quite new to me. I always opt for simpler story telling, plot likes Sophie Kinsella and Nicholas Sparks.
ReplyDeleteSometimes it's nice to sit back and relax, watching the world from the sideline. I agree with that.
